Panic Software, creator of fine software for the web, recently re-released their original MP3 player Audion for modern day Macs. Audion was THE MP3 player on the Mac way back around the turn of the century. While the landscape of music (acquisition and players) has changed dramatically in the last 20 years, Audion still held a soft spot in my heart. I’ve fired it up on my new M1 MacMini a couple weeks ago to relive the joy of the awesome MP3 player.
Audion was awesome, mainly because it wasn’t ugly like WinAmp, and had a rich developer community creating custom skins for the player like this:
This weekend, while trying to locate some old files, I ventured out the garage and fired up my old Apple Power Mac G3. I saw Audion’s app in the dock and fired it up. This was my final playlist from that Mac. I’m pretty sure I stopped using that mac in early 2000 (I remember because I was laid off in March and they allowed me to keep my MacBook Pro (FireWire, aka Pismo, I think) as part of my severance package and I used that as my home machine until I bought the first Intel iMac in 2006ish.
I’m about 99.9% sure all of my MP3’s from that era were sourced legally, cough, cough. But enough history, here was that final track list from that Powermac.

It is weird how music and listening habits have changed in 20 years. A giant playlist on shuffle was the way I did things back then. Although I did have smaller specialized playlists for different things. We won’t even bring up the subject of my shitty filename organization. Then the iPod came out and changed things quite a bit.
I’m much more determined in my music these days. I seek out full albums most of the time depending on the mood but I still have a few smaller playlists laying about. Let’s not forget that most of the world’s music is also easily available via the multitude of subscription services out there, and I subscribe to many of them (mostly as side effects of other subscriptions) like Apple Music, Google Music nay Google Play Music nay YouTube Music, Amazon Music and Spotify.
